Rekindling

Old flames are funny funny things. An old friend; a dog-eared favourite from a lifetime ago; the memory of a face untouched by time or age; a hobby covered in dust - but never truly forgotten.

A bunch of us primary school friends got together for a potluck Barbeque at my house on the 25th of July. What started as a gathering with 9 confirmed guest quickly ballooned to a full-blowned party where everyone in town who knew someone in the party was quickly invited. Cars streamed into my street, bringing friends from a lifetime ago, some of whom we haven't met for 12 years.

Laughter from that night is still reverberating between the walls of my house.

I was barely over the excitement of it all when I was invited to another reunion with friends. 8 years ago, 30 budding writers were united in New Straits Times Paper's Youthquake "Writers' Bloc 6" Workshop in Port Dickson for 4 unforgettable days of writing , fun, games, and making asses out of yous and mes. We met yesterday in KL, talked mostly politics I didn't quite understand (it being the ISA demonstration day), argued over the optimal amount of oysters to be had at buffets, and camwhored like camwhorers do.

All evidence of the buffet has disappeared too far down my digestive tract to mention, but a smile, albeit a rather goofy one, still lingers.

But I have saved the best for last. A lady, a beautiful, gentle, soft-spoken lady who loved the 9-year-old me the way a mother would, resurfaced into my life today, most unexpectedly. We have not met for 11 years, and I have not stopped missing her since the last time we met. Untouched by Time, my memory of her face has not changed, as her words sprang out at me from the computer screen today.

I remember the first things she ever said to me, when I met her for the first time. I was 8, and taking to that sweet new teacher like bees to honey. She told me that she was going to tell me something, and hoped I would always remember.

"If you think you can, you can."
